Acrylic on Canvas

50cm x 60cm

2016

Monument was painted in 2016 in acrylic medium on canvas measuring 50 x 60 cm. It is not framed, but its 1.8 cm thick edges are painted and there's a hook for hanging, so the painting can go directly to the wall.
It is inspired by the hypnotizing song of the Norwegian duo Röyksopp and Swedish singer Robyn.
The painting explores the space that becomes actual after the death of a man - is it the physical position of the carcass in a "pit" or symbolic floating in the vastness of the universe? The painting tries to encourage the observer to ask questions that he will have to answer himself: What do I leave behind? In which space will this legacy reside? Just as a monument on my own grave? As a memory in the minds and hearts of those who knew and loved me? As a footnote in administrative records? Or as a complete memory in the collective consciousness of the universe?

Lyrics of “Monument”:

Make a space
For my body.
Dig a hole.
Push the sides apart.
This is what
I’m controlling.
It’s a moat
The inside that I carve.
This will be my monument
This will be a beacon when I’m gone
Gone, gone
When I’m gone
Gone, gone
When I’m gone
So that when the moment comes,
I can say I did it all with love
Love, love
All with love
Love, love
All with love
Make a cast
Of my body.
Pull back out,
So that I can see.
Let go of
How you knew me.
Let go of
What I used to be.
I will let this monument
Represent a moment of my life
Life, life
Of my life
Life, life
Of my life
Make a cast
Of my body.
Pull back out,
So that I can see.
Let go of
How you knew me.
Let go of
What I used to be.
