Abstract art uses shapes, forms, colours and mark making to achieve its effect.  Abstract art does not seek to produce an accurate depiction of a visual reality. However, it can be applied to art that seeks to separate an element from a particular scene or through the simplification of an object, landscape or figure. Abstract art has grown in stature since the beginning of the 20th Century with many of the great contemporary artists such as Picasso, Mondrian, Kandinsky, Matisse and Klee creating masterpieces that fit within the definition of abstract art.
