Dreaming in the Daylight with Carlo Salomoni

I love dreaming in the daylight, giving life to a surrealism that brings a smile to your face that, just like a medicine, helps us forget the bad in the world. I produce oil paintings, mixed media and acrylics on canvas, wood, paper, terracotta, as well as china drawings, inks, coloured pencils and graphite on paper.

My painting originated in the metaphysical realm, in surrealism, Fantasy Art, in magic realism. My paintings and illustrations evoke a world of dreams and locations in which reality and fantasy melt together. I love to create cycles of different works to guarantee the originality of each individual piece.

What initially drew you towards becoming an artist?

Since I was a boy I had an instinctive urge to draw, to represent small stories. My paternal grandfather and my uncle were painters (but they lived very far from me and I could not associate with them); my father was a carpenter, he made me exclusive, beautiful and colorful wooden toys, he always told me tales of his invention, for me very rich in images to live with the imagination. I therefore believe that I have inherited a strong propensity for the artistic representation of fantastic scenes and stories that bring back childhood memories.


How would you describe your own personal style?

My paintings represent daydreams. I find it difficult to categorize myself in a pictorial movement, as my painting derives partly from surrealism, metaphysics, partly from magical realism and Fantasy Art. I could almost coin the term for a sui generis pictorial movement, which I would define, Realism of Dream. ( “ DREAM REALISM “)

What pushed you in that direction and how can you see your work evolving in the future?

Up to now my path has been absolutely spontaneous, it has simply followed the suggestions coming from my Inner Child. I have a large and inexhaustible imaginative baggage to draw from, that of Universal Memories related to childhood. I leave these channels open, they will suggest me the best way for the future, step by step, in continuity with every present moment.


What inspires you in your work, is there a driving factor that draws you to the easel?

As I said, my painting has, more often than not, a narrative character. Each painting is a small story that often continues into the next painting. In this way I give life to pictorial cycles that are always original, never banal and / or repetitive.The stimulus to start can be the most different: a poetic phrase, the text of a song, a form of nature, the detail of a landscape, a perfume that evokes memories. I really love the painting of my artist colleagues, of the present or of the past, so also figurative themes of others suggest a subject to me, which I distort or interpret in my own way.

Are there particular individuals who have encouraged / inspired you along the way, friends, family, teachers, maybe even other artists?

The fundamental encouragement came from my wife who, in addition to instilling confidence in me, has always been my muse, through her short stories, novels and poems.


When it comes to creating your work, do you have a preferred medium, certain types of brushes or tools you love to use?

I am fond of a certain type of brushes and I never miss them. I left oil painting about 13 years ago, because I had become intolerant to turpentine, white spirit and other mediums. Since then I have been using acrylic colours and have developed a technique that allows me to have a final result like that of oil. I love to experiment, so I often try new colours and mediums that help the evolution of my technique.

When it comes to the subject matter of your work, what draws you to those themes?

In my paintings there are almost always characters, not only humans, but also animals or fantastic and anthropomorphic figures. The landscape is almost always in the background, I rarely create pure and simple landscapes.


Could you describe the process behind your art? How do you get from concept to execution?

Drawing is the fundamental basis of my painting. Sometimes I do a series of sketches on paper which I then translate into paintings on canvas, panel. Other times I draw directly on the support to be painted.

Could you describe your normal day as an artist? Have you set routines and rituals or is a more a case of when the moment is right you work?

I work mainly in the evening, until late at night. During the day I dedicate myself to walks with the dog, in the nature, I carry out the daily activities for the house and the family, I do everything necessary for my internet business. My studio is a room in my home. This is an advantage for me, because it allows me to devote myself to painting at any time I want, perhaps in a moment of particular inspiration.


When you work, do you focus on one piece at a time until completion or are you working on multiple pieces at the same time?

I almost always carry out several paintings at the same time, and each of them is influenced by the other, especially in the colour palette.

Which of your artworks are you most proud?

I have all my works in my heart. The last work almost always remains alive inside me, until it gradually gives way to a new painting.There is a subject that often comes back in my paintings, it is my humanized Moon, emblem of the world of dreams. I am undoubtedly very attached to my Moon.


Is there a fellow artist alive today that you admire? If so, why?

I really love the work of colleagues, even if they propose an art that is far from mine. It would be impossible to mention them all. I indirectly thank all those who are an example and inspiration for my creativity.

If you could travel back in time, is there a particular artistic period / era that you would like to have been involved in?

There are several artistic periods of the past that I admire, but Impressionism is probably the period I would like to relive, perhaps because it seemed a very romantic era to me.


What challenges do you feel the 21st century artist has to overcome?

The web offers countless artists of great skill, the biggest challenge is to continue to remain visible and traceable in an increasingly crowded artistic world.The painter must also devote himself to marketing, but to do it best he should neglect the creative part a little. The ideal would be to have at your side, who can help you in marketing.

What advice would you give to a young aspiring artist currently studying art?

I recommend never abandoning the dream of living as an artist, even in the face of difficulties. At the same time, I suggest keeping your feet in reality, and never getting tired of working, to test the techniques by hand, in order to better express your ideas through images.


Despite having developed your own distinctive style, is there another style of art that you are immediately drawn towards and admire? Why?

I really love the naive style, Pop Surrealism, Magic Realism. I think the various expressions intersect each other.

We have all heard of the unfinished masterpiece, even Da Vinci laboured away at the Mona Lisa for years and years, have you works that are in a continual process of evolution? When working on an artwork do you find it hard to let go? Knowing when enough is enough?

The progressive increase of the experience helped me to understand the moment when a painting is finished. But in the past, uncertainties have always been there. I happened to touch up paintings made a few years earlier; the result was a total upheaval.


Many people see artists as storytellers or advocates for a cause, do you believe that it is an artist’s responsibility to shine a light on a particular subject / theme, or do you create purely for the sake of expression your creative nature?

I paint for the main taste of creating, but, directly or indirectly, the events I experience influence my painting; for this reason the artist is often the bearer of social and, at times, political messages.

What are you working on at the moment?

I'm working on medium and large formats but I would also like to do extra large paintings.


Have you ever been part of an artistic group / movement? How did your work benefit from that experience?

No, while admiring the painting of others and some pictorial tendencies, I have never felt officially part of any movement.

When is your next exhibition? Is it a solo or group exhibition? Could you tell us a little about the exhibition, when and where it is?

For some years I have been acting as an independent artist and I basically use the web showcase (through art galleries and platforms) to present my art.But I miss a real exhibition, direct contact with the public, experiences that I have loved very much in the past.
